ABSTRACT
Lesson organization and management is at the heart of successful teaching. Organization is most significant before the lesson begins, and in clearing up at the end, though some minor adjustments to the organization are frequently required as the session unfolds. Management is essentially dealing with what takes place during the lesson. In practice, organizing and managing are interrelated, as good organization facilitates effective management. Issues concerning organization and management will form the basis for most discussions with the class teacher and mentor and shape your ideas for when you have responsibility for your own classroom during your NQT induction year (see Chapter 13). In its simplest terms, to organize entails providing a structure for what is taking place during a lesson. It has two broad, though interrelated, strands:
