ABSTRACT

One of the great changes in education and schooling over the past few years has been the increasing importance of ICT. Videotapes have been a good way of introducing young children to faiths not on their doorstep but now, with careful use, the richness of material to be accessed from the internet can be a very powerful tool for learning, especially in the primary school – for the teacher as well as for the pupil. It is important to pause a moment on the use of the term ‘careful use’. Websites do need to be vetted before use with pupils as, in the rather fraught relationships within and between some religious traditions, some websites are highly partisan. Websites too are subject to the same old problem which affected the use of reference books – pupils printing out information in quantity which they never truly make their own. Having noted this it must also be said that in careful hands the internet is an invaluable resource.
