Trinculo is particularly troubled. His question focuses exactly on that vexing boundary and from the perspective of a European signifying system, the lineaments of an exotic, aboriginal or Indian culture are bound to smell fishy. The problem centres precisely on that major cultural question. On which side of the necessary, defining boundary does the creature Caliban fall? Is he a man, or is he something else?
