ABSTRACT
It is sometimes assumed that lighting recommendations are determined simply by the inherent capabilities of the visual system. This is untrue. The characteristics of the visual system are undeniably important, but the available lighting technology, the cost of light, and the social context of the times all affect lighting recommendations. This influence of nonvisual factors on lighting recommendations is evident from a simple review of the history of lighting practice.
