ABSTRACT

When looking at trigger words in the previous chapter, it should have become evident that they do not operate alone. Much of the meaning of any question depends on how those words are modified – how they are combined with others. Although that is an important part of the way questions work, there is another element, too: how questions are divided and laid out on the page. At first glance, this might seem more to do with issues of artistic elegance than meaning. However, you will see in this chapter that question layouts connect crucially with the nature of the task set. By the end of the chapter, you will have a much clearer sense of how to go about answering questions with multiple sections to them. This chapter takes you through a range of different aspects of question layout and leads to an opportunity to practise what has been learnt.
