ABSTRACT
Cities are, and always have been, the space where changes of the economic and productive system and the organization of the institutional system take place. Therefore, income growth (investment and employment), structural change and innovative processes are associated with urban development. One could say, then, that cities play, and have played, a strategic role in the evolution of societies and economic development throughout history.
