History of nomenclature of Lavandula species, hybrids and cultivars

Different kinds of lavender have been classified and reclassified at will over the years. In 1937, Mrs Chaytor from Kew reclassified the genus on the basis of combination of two previous classifications. The new scheme gave five sections based on differences in habit and anatomy, but had many intermediates which could not be properly segregated.
