ABSTRACT
Although necrosis and apoptosis are two mutually exclusive ways of cell demise, either option is present in a cell. Importantly, the same exogenous trigger (including xenobiotics, but also other factors) can induce either the apoptotic or the necrotic pathway. However, depending on the cellular energy status and the duration and extent of the insult, both modes of cell demise can occur in the same tissue.
