ABSTRACT

The words ‘continuity’ and ‘progression’ are sometimes used as if they are synonymous. It is worth exploring their interpretation, for teaching and learning. Although the meaning and the implication of each word are different, the words are strongly linked in the context of planning. Both continuity and progression apply to planning for conceptual understanding and for skill development. Continuity applies to provision and is important between schools and between classes in a school. In this module, we concentrate on withinschool continuity. It is assumed that teachers’ normal practices derive from a whole-school plan of work. Issues about liaison, for curriculum continuity purposes, between schools are not specifically addressed here.
