ABSTRACT

Paul Morrison's interview follows the discussion of story in the previous chapter with a clear description of how he is allowing material to arise for him when writing a screenplay, rather than consciously seeking it out as a documentary filmmaker. Similarly, on the film set, the story takes over and it becomes bigger than the director's will. In both roles Paul finds he is subservient to something greater than himself. It is this, he notes, that can also create the one or two transcendental moments every film should try to achieve. Paul's interview is followed by two chapters on the film within us and within the psychotherapist's room. Being a psychotherapist as well as a director and writer, Paul Morrison is a filmmaker especially qualified to offer an articulate bridge to the final section of the book.
