ABSTRACT

The development of courses in psychosocial interventions (PSI) could be considered one of the success stories of recent times. Since the original Thorn initiative of 1992 (Gamble 1995) there has been a year-on-year increase in the number of courses available at higher education institutions. This has culminated in the national provision of approximately thirty courses ranging from diploma to master’s degree level (Brooker et al. 2002). Some 600 students have now received training in PSI, and new courses are continually being developed. Nationally the provision of training shows a patchy distribution, with a ‘Londoncentric’ overprovision and Wales waiting ten years for its first diplomates at the authors’ institution.
