ABSTRACT
This chapter examines the selection of headteachers. First it examines trends in headteacher appointments in England over the last few years. Trends are apparent from a study of national statistics, which show, for instance, a rise in appointments of female heads. Further statistics from a survey of headship appointments give an indication of the extent to which those appointed were internal or external appointments.
