ABSTRACT

The moment of conception in the life cycle of a head is when the decision is taken to apply for headship. We can see from the research analysed in chapter 8 that from that point through to the aftermath of retirement there are several stages which can be separately defined but whose length depends on the personality of the head and the circumstances of her headship. Broadly, these stages are the following:

• Preparation for applying • From appointment to taking up the post • The first term and first challenges • Settling down • Keeping moving • Seeing it out.
