ABSTRACT
This section aims to give an overview of how headship has changed over the last 50 years and particularly since 1988. The period has been chosen to follow trends before and after the Great Debate of 1976 since this was the first noteworthy occasion when central government and the Prime Minister began to focus on education and particularly the state of schools.
