ABSTRACT
The first section traces the development of leadership and management thought. This is mainly derived from the organisational and business literature. Although there have been some approaches to leadership which are purely educational, e.g. instructional leadership, most of the development of leadership thought in education has been derived from this more general literature which is summarised here. In particular the recent interest in transformational and charismatic leadership in schools has emerged in this way.
