ABSTRACT

Is there such a thing as authentic communication about development? And if so, what does it mean? What constraints and opportunities are involved in the effort to communicate authentically about issues of development to an audience in the West? In this chapter I reflect on these questions on the basis of my experiences as communication officer for a large Dutch Protestant church during the past four years. The data emerge from these concrete experiences. The chapter is not the outcome of detached research. On the contrary, it intends to give a glimpse ‘from within’ of some of the participants’ points of view and modes of communicating. I also make references occasionally to experiences of fellow agencies.
