ABSTRACT

The Pan-British world depended on powerful economic ties to sustain its interdependence and to nourish its amazing prosperity. Beyond question, the British proved eminently successful in these twin tasks. Yet, the Pan-British world depended on more than its economic vitality for its persistence. At the very heart of the British success stood its notions of liberty and freedom. These ideals joined British subjects throughout the Pan-British Atlantic and gave them a powerful sense of belonging to a larger community.
