ABSTRACT

By the 1890s United States economic power far exceeded that of the other leading industrial powers. However, the overseas presence of industrial states such as Great Britain still dwarfed that of the United States. Near the end of the decade the United States embarked on a series of outward thrusts that made it a major player in the Pacific and increasingly in East Asia. The nation’s military power opened the way, as it had in the Caribbean. Professionals and experts would follow in the wake of generals and soldiers.
