ABSTRACT

Truckers There is a number of companies that now offer expeditions to most regions of the Third World travelling in ‘trucks’. They are operationalised versions of overland trips that have become increasingly popular for ‘would-be backpackers’, as Truck Africa (1995 brochure) puts it, and are aimed at the 18-45 age bracket. Exodus stipulate: ‘This style of travelling is more suited to younger people . . . We therefore apply an age limit of 17-45 on all trips of 4 weeks’ duration and over. We will occasionally waive this for people who are older, and have demonstrated to us that they have the right attitude and have completed similar journeys before’ (4).
