ABSTRACT

It would be difficult to find co-authors of a book on education with educational backgrounds as diverse as ours. Pamela moved all over the United States as a child in the 1970s and attended more than 15 different public schools by the time she graduated from high school. Hugh went to a private boarding school in England during the 1940s and 1950s where he was taught (among other things) how to speak proper English. Pamela remembers young teachers in bobs and beads. Hugh remembers young teachers back from the war in Burma or Berlin. Pam remembers as a child watching the horrors of Vietnam on television. Hugh recalls nights in shelters or under the dining room table while bombs and later rockets fell on England’s industrial heartland. Pam attended San Diego State University as an undergraduate. Hugh attended the University of Oxford. Pam never took a philosophy class during her entire school career. Hugh believes that philosophy is at the heart of every discipline.
