ABSTRACT

Whilst Cardiff is one of Europe’s smallest capital cities, with a 1998 population of 321,000, the Cardiff metropolitan region has a population of 1.8 million and accounts for 62.1 per cent of the total population of Wales (2.9 million in 1998). The population of the individual unitary authorities within the metropolitan region is shown in table 5.1, and the location of the 22 unitary authorities in Wales in figure 5.1.
