ABSTRACT

Recent research has made it clear that live performance of classical music, in its present form, is in trouble. Johan Idema states: ‘the classical concert ritual somehow seems to scare people off’ (2012: 9). Why classical music events scare people off, and how this might be dealt with, is one major area of discussion in this chapter. The other concerns the relationship between the live format of the music and its mediatization, as discussed by Phillip Auslander (2008).
