ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the Dutch national view on knowledge production is presented. The actual title of the seminar was ‘Universities, Knowledge Infrastructure and the Learning Region’. This means that it is also necessary to zoom in on the region. Initially, however, some facts and figures and an explanation of some of the special features that relate to research and science in the Netherlands are presented before getting to the core issues of this chapter. The contents of this chapter were to a degree inspired by the views of Michael Gibbons concerning the new mode of knowledge production.
