ABSTRACT

People who move across borders have many names. Some of these, such as ‘guest worker’, ‘refugee’, or ‘ethnic minority’, refer to the conditions on which they have been accepted in their new country of residence. Recently, concepts such as ‘diaspora’ or ‘transnational community’ have become more prominent in research on migration and migrant incorporation. However, what is the added value in applying these terms? And what is the difference between a diaspora and a transnational community?
