ABSTRACT
Many readers whose first priority is the visual rather than the literary arts come to Barthes through his work on photography and cinema. Barthes’s work on music is highly significant to those working within that field. This chapter looks at Barthes’s contribution to these areas and in so doing prepares the ground for the next chapter’s examination of Barthes’s last book, Camera Lucida.
