ABSTRACT
Our aim in this book is to examine how and in what ways pedagogical strategies work to change learner identities. However, in order to proceed we need to make more explicit what we mean when we speak of identity, for this is a contested concept subject to ongoing dispute. In this chapter we outline what identity means to us and provide an overview of the different meanings that continue to be ascribed to the concept.
