ABSTRACT

Son of Cadmus’ son Polydorus and his wife Nycteis. When Labdacus was still an infant, he inherited the throne of Thebes from his father, and Nycteus, his maternal grandfather, ruled the city as his regent. On the death of Nycteus, his younger brother Lycus inherited the regency. Labdacus, when he became an adult, took over the royal authority, but fought an unsuccessful war against Pandion, king of Athens, and died shortly afterwards, leaving behind a son, Laius, only one year old; and so Lycus once more became regent.
