ABSTRACT

Son of Demeter and Iasion. After the wedding of Cadmus and Harmonia, Iasion made love to the goddess in a field in Crete. Plutus’ name means ‘wealth’ and he protected the abundance given by fertile fields. He was worshipped with his mother at Eleusis. There was a tradition that Plutus was blinded by Zeus to make him impartial in his distribution of riches and to prevent him from making the rich even richer. In Aristophanes’ play named after him Plutus’ sight is restored, so that he may be able to distinguish honest men from the dishonest.
