The name of a mythical female who lived at Marpessus near Troy; she devoted herself to the service of Apollo, who gave her the gift of prophecy. She was believed to have expressed her oracles in riddles, and to have written them down on leaves. On account of the renown she gained, her name came to be used as a generic appellation, and many places claimed the presence of a Sibyl. Most famous were those of Erythrae, Libya, and Cumae.
