ABSTRACT

Son of Catreus, king of Crete. An oracle had declared that one of Catreus’ children would kill him; hearing of it, Althaemenes emigrated to Rhodes. When his sister Apemosyne declared that Hermes had raped her and that in consequence she was pregnant, Althaemenes kicked her to death. Later his father Catreus came to fetch him home, wishing to bequeath on him his kingdom, but Althaemenes took his crew for pirates and killed his father, thus fulfilling the oracle.
