ABSTRACT

Son of Heracles and Astyoche, daughter of Phylas; king of Ephyra in Thesprotia. When Tlepolemus grew up, he took refuge at the court of King Ceyx of Trachis, together with Heracles’ other sons; and later he went to Athens. Tlepolemus and Licymnius, halfbrother of Heracles’ mother Alcmena, settled at Argos, and it was there that Tlepolemus killed Licymnius, either in a quarrel, or by accident when Licymnius tried to stop him from beating a slave. For this murder Tlepolemus was exiled from Argos and took his wife Polyxo and a large company of followers to found a kingdom on the island of Rhodes. There his people settled in three districts, Lindus, Ialysus, and Cameirus. He had been one of Helen’s suitors and took nine shiploads of Rhodians to the Trojan War. There, however, he was killed by Sarpedon of Lycia. His son by Polyxo was Deipylus.
