ABSTRACT

The surname of two Etruscan brothers, Aulus (Olus) and Caeles Vibenna, great heroes in the mythology of Etruria, and allies of Mastarna. Their legend was obscure even in Roman times; it was believed however, that they captured Cacus (described in an Etruscan story as a great seer, and inspired by Apollo) in a sacred wood where they forced him to reveal his secrets. The brothers were driven out of Etruria and exiled. According to the historian Tacitus, Caeles was granted one of the hills of Rome by Tarquinius Priscus or another Roman king, and it was subsequently named the Caelian Hill after him.
