ABSTRACT

Daughter of Nereus and Doris (who was herself a daughter of Oceanus) and therefore a sea-goddess. Poseidon saw her dancing on the island of Naxos and fell in love with her, but she fled to the Titan Atlas for protection. Poseidon sent out the sea-creatures, his servants, to look for her, and at last the dolphin found her and pleaded for Poseidon so persuasively that she married him. And so Poseidon placed the constellation of the Dolphin in the sky. Their many children included Triton, Rhode and Benthesicyme.
