ABSTRACT

When Achilles himself returned to battle, he reproached the pair of horses for having failed to bring Patroclus back safe from battle. Xanthus then reminded Achilles that Patroclus had died not through any fault of theirs, but because Apollo had decreed it in order to give glory to Hector, and he added that Achilles’ death too was now close at hand. At that point the Furies struck Xanthus dumb, and he never spoke again. Achilles, however, declared that the prophecy of his death was nothing new, since he had heard it before.
