He himself was killed by Hermes, who was known for that reason as ‘Slayer of Argus’ [Argeiphontes]. When Io was changed into a heifer, Argus was set over her as guardian. Zeus, however, commanded Hermes to slay him. Hera set the eyes of Argus in her favourite bird, the peacock, (or else turned him into that bird). His son was Iasus 1.
