ABSTRACT

A Sicilian of Trojan descent on his mother’s side. His father was the god of the river Crinisus. Acestes joined Priam’s side in the Trojan War and returned to Sicily with his friend Elymus. Acestes was king of Drepanum in the west of the island, near the shrine of Venus on Mount Eryx, and twice entertained Venus’ son Aeneas in his wanderings. On the second occasion Aeneas celebrated his father Anchises’ funeral games. The city of Egesta was originally named Acesta after him by its founders, the Trojan followers of Aeneas who remained in Sicily.
