ABSTRACT

The third mythical king of Athens; like his predecessor Cecrops, he sprang from the soil. His wife Pedias was from Sparta and bore him two daughters, Atthis and Cranae. When Atthis died, Cranaus renamed his kingdom Attica after her. According to Athenian tradition, it was during his reign that the great flood took place and the Greek Noah, Deucalion, fled to Attica. Deucalion’s son Amphictyon married Cranae and subsequently expelled Cranaus from his throne.
