ABSTRACT

Son of Cepheus and king of Tegea; later king of all Arcadia in succession to Cepheus’ elder brother Lycurgus. In a single combat intended to determine the fate of the Peloponnese, he killed Heracles’ son Hyllus; as a result of his victory, the Heraclids, descendants of Heracles, agreed to depart from the land and refrain from attacking it for a hundred years. Echemus married Tyndareos’ daughter Timandra, who bore him Laodocus, but later deserted him for Phyleus, king of Dulichium.
