ABSTRACT
Acca Larentia, the wife of Faustulus-the shepherd who found Romulus and Remus in the shewolf’s lair and reared them-was, by virtue of her association with this animal, sometimes called lupa, which had a double meaning in Latin, since it signified both shewolf and whore. Acca was therefore also called Faula, another name for whores, and this was sometimes altered to Fabula, literally ‘legend’ or ‘story’.
