I come now to speak of the new and modern cities, strongholds and castles, and of the orders and methods which should be used in building them. First it should be
ensured, as is said below, that the fortresses be compact and self-contained, and their walls of limited circumference, since the smaller their circumference the easier they are to defend and watch over.
