ABSTRACT
However, despite all the precepts that the ancients have left for us with respect to the exterior and the discoveries of French Architects concerning the disposition of the parts of the interior, there can be no doubt that we see very few buildings in which it is not evident that the interior has been sacrificed to the exterior, or that the latter has been neglected in order to arrive at a more advantageous arrangement of the apartments inside. The result is that in the former we see a truly admirable exterior ordonnance, while most of the rooms inside are without comfort and without symmetry. Conversely, inside the latter, we see an elegant disposition, but the exterior is without satisfying proportion and affords no sense of fitness, which leads me to believe that the limited study of these matters by most Architects is the cause of the lack of intimate satisfaction observable in some of our buildings.
