ABSTRACT

Pleasing monuments are the source for both precept and example for the disposition of the parts and construction of the diverse buildings our needs require, because all is connected in all the parts of the same art, a principle that I have published, and one that I restate on every occasion that there is cause to make mention of it in the various related domains. This proposition is the fundamental theorem from which flow the truths that form the science of building and of which the demonstration shall prove the following: in all types of building great examples create the rule, and the art is to imitate them.
