ABSTRACT

Young people in care turn to prostitution for a variety of reasons. It may be a way of redeeming their low self-esteem, as a result of poor family experiences, or as a way of making ‘quick’ money. As in so many other areas of youth behaviour the government has announced a set of guidelines to steer local work (DoH 2000). For the first time young people under 18 who prostitute themselves are deemed to be treated by local services as victims of child abuse.
