ABSTRACT

The Gambia was a former British colony, and it has been suggested that the country has since been recolonised, but this time by tourists. The organisation Gambia Tourism Concern was therefore set up to help establish a more ethical and sustainable form of tourism. Initiatives include the production of a street newspaper called Concern Magazine and an in-flight video that is shown on First Choice Air 2000 flights. The video aims to give tourists more awareness of the local people and their environment, and to encourage appropriate and sensitive behaviour. The magazine is sold by local vendors, especially unemployed youngsters on the beaches, who make a percentage on what they sell. It is sold mainly to tourists and has the function of providing information and education.
