ABSTRACT

in cognitive development in sighted children. Parents of most of our children may spend a great deal of time reading books to them and showing them pictures. Pictures can help very young children learning to read, and they convey considerable useful information about referents (DeLoache, 1989). Unfortunately, access to tangible pictures has been relatively restricted in the United States and many other countries. This has unfortunate implications for the education and rehabilitation of blind individuals, in childhood and later on in life.
