ABSTRACT

Modern independent Angola has a short but turbulent and chaotic economic history. To the dramatic consequences of almost permanent civil war and international military intervention, one should add the effect of disastrous economic policy. A main reason for this situation is Angola’s exceedingly rich endowment of natural resources. In fact, Angola is moving rapidly to a position as the main African oil exporter. The diamond industry is expected to reach a similar position shortly after a reasonable degree of security can be obtained.
