ABSTRACT

This chapter describes parents’ experiences in hospital and looks at what professionals can do to care for and support parents when their baby dies. Some parents receive sensitive, high-quality care in hospital, but others are less fortunate, and some parents, who receive very poor hospital care, feel distressed and angry for a long time afterwards. What is written in this chapter cannot change what these parents have experienced, but we draw on their experiences to describe parents’ needs at the time of their baby’s death, and to suggest how hospital care can, where necessary, be improved.
