Before Allen got busy on his colony, a Scots disciple of Owen's launched an experiment in London. George Mudie came from Edinburgh where he had, in 1812, been a member of a discussion group which used to meet in St. Andrew's Chapel. He had tried to persuade the group to start a newsroom; but the majority of the members were apparently against it. 136 As a result, he had left in disgust for London where he published The Modern Athens, London and (according to Lord Henry Cockburn) ‘various other personal and vulgar works’. 137 He became editor of The Sun.
