Before we can plan any management of a recreation site it is essential that full understanding is gained of the site itself. This will not only help us to establish the opportunities that the site offers, but will also inform us about the many factors that may constrain what we are able to do. It is particularly pertinent to the management of recreational sites in that whilst recreation may be a key objective of the site, other factors such as conservation, landscape, archaeology and community issues need to be considered in making decisions about development. The following examples illustrate how individual site issues may affect its management.
