ABSTRACT

There are three sets of reading on this topic: • on primary schooling in the UK, especially in Wales and Scotland; • on citizenship and political literacy among primary children and primary

teachers; • on devolution in the UK. On primary schooling in Wales there is Nash (1977) and in Scotland Nash (1973) and Hamilton (1977). There has been a rural emphasis in the Welsh and Scottish research, with several studies focused on small, country schools. Nash (1973) and Hamilton (1977) are about Edinburgh, but Cardiff primary schools are largely unstudied. In England, there is a large literature covered in the critiques of Woods (1996) and Connolly (1998) (pp. 11 and 74 of this book).
